Golfers Fourth, Matteson Second at ACC Championship

April 19, 2003

ATLANTA – Senior Troy Matteson and freshman Thomas Jordan continued their strong play Saturday, leading Georgia Tech to a 1-under-par 287 and nudging the Yellow Jackets up a spot to fourth after 36 holes in the Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Golf Championship.

The tournament is being contested on the 7,102-yard, par 72 Old North State Club in Uwharrie Point, N.C. After no team could match par on Friday, four teams broke par in Saturday’s competition, paced by Wake Forest’s 6-under 282. Tech came into the event looking for its fourth ACC title in five years, but stands 17 shots off the pace of Wake Forest heading into Sunday’s final round.

Wake Forest (282-575) and North Carolina (286-576), each with three golfers making par or better in Saturday’s round, hold the top two positions, one shot apart, with 18 holes to play. Clemson shot 286, two shots under par, and is in third place at 580, five shots behind the Demon Deacons and four in back of the Tar Heels.

Tech is another 12 strokes behind Clemson at 592 after shooting 287, the only other school to beat par Saturday.

Matteson, the defending NCAA champion, shot the day’s best round, a 5-under-par 67, and is in a tie for second place at 3-under-par 141 with Wake Forest’s Brent Wanner and North Carolina’s Richard Treis, four shots behind Bill Haas of Wake Forest (137). Jordan shot a 3-under 69 and is tied for ninth place with Clemson’s D.J. Trahan, the 2002 national player of the year.

Haas carded a 68 Friday to extend his lead to four strokes, while teammate Wanner shot 69 and Chris Yoder shot 70 for the Deacons. Treis shot 69, Ramon Brescansa shot 70 and Dustin Bray 72 for the Tar Heels. Clemson got a 68 from Trahan and a 72 from Jack Ferguson.

Senior Adam Cranford shot 74 to count for Tech, while sophomores Chan Wongluekiet and Nicholas Thompson each posted 77s.
