ATLANTA – Sophomores Kevin Larsen and Roberto Castro each shot two-under-par 70 Sunday to pace top-ranked Georgia Tech, but the Yellow Jackets were unable to overtake the teams ahead of them and finished in third place at the Carpet Capital Collegiate at The Farm golf club in Rocky Face, Ga.
The Yellow Jackets, along with Wake Forest and South Carolina, took advantage of ideal weather conditions Sunday and posted even-par 288 team scores, the best of the tournament. Tech shaved four strokes off the Georgia’s 36-hole lead by the end, but the Bulldogs and Demon Deacons both maintained their positions.
Third-ranked Georgia, who posted a 292 score Friday, won its second straight event of the fall and finished with a 54-hole total of 879, 15-over-par. Wake Forest held onto second place with a score of 881, finishing two shots behind Georgia and two ahead of Tech (883) in what became a three-team race. East Tennessee State finished fourth at 895, and Clemson rallied to finish fifth at 896. Defending champion Florida was 10th in the final results.
Larsen, playing his first event of the fall for Tech, went out in two-under-par 34 and wound up Tech’s top finisher for the event, tying with three other golfers at four-over-par 220. That was three strokes off the pace of medalist Rhys Davies of East Tennessee State, who shot 73 Sunday and finished at one-over-par 217.
Castro, Tech’s stroke average leader coming in, highlighted his round Sunday with an eagle at the par-5 15th hole and finished the tournament in a tie for 11th place at 221, just missing his fourth straight top-10 finish of the fall.
Nicholas Thompson, a senior, produced his third top-20 finish in four events despite shooting 75 Sunday, finishing in a tie for 17th place at 222. Junior Mike Barbosa shot 73 Sunday for a 54-hole total of 224, and senior Chan Song was tied for 40th at 227 after posting a 73 Sunday.
Tech will finish its fall schedule next week in the Hooters Collegiate Match Play at Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla.
