Golfers Fade to Ninth at Las Vegas

March 12, 2006

ATLANTA – Georgia Tech’s Mike Barbosa led his team with a five-over-par 77 Sunday, but none of the other Yellow Jackets were able to break 80 as the fourth-ranked Yellow Jackets dipped to a ninth-place finish at the Southern Highlands Collegiate golf tournament in Las Vegas, Nev.

Tech’s team score of 318 was surpassed only by New Mexico as the high score of the final round, and only one of the 15 teams was able to break 300 Sunday on the 7,510-yard, par 72 Southern Highlands Golf Club.

That team just happened to be UNLV, the host school, which turned in a 290 (two shots over par) and surged to a 10-shot victory over top-ranked Georgia. The Rebels threw out a 78 and boasted three of the top six individuals, led by Matt Kinsinger, who closed with a 69 for a 54-hole total of 214, two under par and three ahead of teammate Seung-su Han (71 – 217).

No. 2 Oklahoma State finished third, another 10 shots behind Georgia, led by Pablo Martin (73 – 218). Third-ranked Florida was fourth, followed by Clemson, Arizona State and Texas A&M, who tied for fifth place. UCLA was eighth.

Barbosa, a senior from St. Petersburg, Fla., finished with a 54-hole total of 226, 10 over par but still good for his best finish of the year, a tie for 16th place. Roberto Castro shot 80 Sunday, the highest competitive score of his collegiate career, and posted the highest 54-hole score of his career (227), but still recorded his sixth top-20 finish in seven tournaments this year.

Freshman Cameron Tringale (80 Sunday) tied for 30th place at 230, Kevin Larsen (81) tied for 36th at 231, and Taylor Hall (82) tied for 57th at 235.
