Golf Team Tied for Fourth at NCAA East Regional

ATLANTA – Freshman Roberto Castro led the way with a 68, and Georgia Tech is tied for fourth place with Clemson after 36 holes at the NCAA East Regional golf tournament in New Haven, Conn.

The tournament is being played at The Course at Yale, which plays to a par of 70 and measures 6,749 yards. The top 10 finishers among the 27 teams after 54 holes will advance to the NCAA Championship June 1-4 in Hot Springs, Va., and with 18 holes to play, only five shots separate the top eight teams, and four others are within two shots of the cut line.

Tech, the fourth seed, is four shots off the pace set by Penn State, which shot 285 on Friday to take a one shot lead over first-round leader Florida. The Nittany Lions, 19th seed, have a 26-hole total of 575. The top-seeded Gators shot 290 (10 over par) on Friday and have a two-round score of 576. North Carolina surged upward with a 3-over-par 283 for a tournament total of 577 and is in third place.

Tech is tied with No. 2 seed Clemson, which shot 291 Friday, at 579. Georgia (293), the No. 3 seed and Auburn (286) are tied for sixth at 580. Rhode Island (289) is in eighth place at 581, and Wake Forest (288) is in ninth place at 584. Jacksonville State, which shot the day’s best round of 282, is tied for 10th place with Georgia State (300) at 588.

Tennessee, Duke and NC State all are one shot behind 10th place, and Vanderbilt is within two shots.

Castrop, a freshman from Alpharetta, Ga., played the front nine in 3-under 31 and had five birdies in his two-under-par round. He has a 36-hole total of 142, two over par, and is in a group of 10 golfers tied for ninth place, five shots off the pace.

Only Dustin Bray of North Carolina (66) and Matias Anselmo of Jacksonville State (67) posted better scores than did Castro in the morning round. Bill Haas of Wake Forest maintained the individual leader after a level-par 70, which left him at 3-under-par 137, one shot ahead of Florida’s Camilo Villegas (70-138). Kenneth Fahey of Rhode Island was another shot back at one-under 139.

Junior Chan Wongluekiet carded his second straight 72 (2 over par) and is tied for 19th place at 144. Junior Nick Thompson shot 73 and is tied for 24th place 145. Sophomore Mike Barbosa shot 75 to count for Tech Friday, and his 36-hole total of 148 is tied for 51st. Freshman Kevin Larsen posted his second straight 80.
