Georgia Tech was unable to bounce back from a poor second round, posting a team score of 300 Tuesday to fall to 15th place among the 18 competing teams in the final standings of the Puerto Rico Classic golf tournament in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico.
Tech freshman Cameron Tringale, who started the day tied for third place after a pair of 70s, shot 78 on Tuesday and fell to a tie for 27th individually at two-over-oar 218, 13 shots off the pace. Georgia’s Chris Kirk won medalist honors at 11-under 205 after posting a 67 Tuesday.
Taylor Hall, another freshman, paced the No. 2-ranked Yellow Jackets with an even-par 72 on the Westin Rio Mar Resort’s River Course and tied for 63rd individually (10-over 226). Robert Castro finished in a tie for 38th place (74 – 220) for Tech, while Kevin Larsen tied for 59th (76 – 225) and Mike Barbosa tied for 79th (80 – 231).
Georgia, the nation’s top-ranked team, shot 279 Tuesday to pass Oklahoma State (299) and win the team title with a 21-under-par score of 843. Fourth-ranked Florida (17-under 847) finished second, four shots back, and the Cowboys (2-under 862) finished third. First-round leader Alabama (1-over 865) was fourth.
Tech is next in action Mar. 10-12 at the Southern Highlands Collegiate in Las Vegas, Nev.
