Golf Team Fifth at Puerto Rico

Feb. 21, 2010

Rio Grande, Puerto Rico –

James White fired a 3-under-par 69 to lead three Georgia Tech golfers under par, and the 10th-ranked Yellow Jackets are in fifth place with a 3-under-par team score of 285 after the first round of the Puerto Rico Classic.

White’s 69 was his third straight subpar round of the spring and his fourth straight subpar round on the 6,902-yard, par-72 Rio Mar Resort River Course, where he posted scores of 68-70-70 last spring to tie for sixth place in this event.

The sophomore from Acworth, Ga., is currently tied for sixth place individually, four shots off the pace of Kevin Tway of Oklahoma State, who shot a 7-under-par 65. The top-ranked Cowboys used four subpar scores to post a 13-under-par team total of 275 for a two-stroke lead over Texas (277), which had five subpar rounds and tossed out a 71.

Clemson shot 281 and is in third place, followed by East Tennessee State (284), Georgia Tech (285), and Purdue, Georgia and Kent State (tied at 286).

Juniors John-Tyler Griffin and Paul Haley posted 2-under-par 70 scores to help lift the Jackets, and are tied for 14th individually. Kyle Scott had the fourth counting score for Tech, a 76, while William Miller shot 77 in his 2009-10 debut.

“We just needed a fourth score today,” said head coach Bruce Heppler. “Kyle is pretty disappointed his didn’t hit the ball well. James was 3-over through five and had six birdies after that, so he played very well. J.T. continues to play well, and it was great to see Paul have a good round for us. We look forward to getting back after it tomorrow.”
