Golf Team Cruises to Victory in Hawaii

Feb. 11, 2006

ATLANTA –

Georgia Tech shot a six-under-par 278 Friday in the final round and cruised to victory at the UH Hilo Intercollegiate golf tournament, while Yellow Jacket freshman Cameron Tringale held on for medalist honors with a one-under-par 70.

Paced Friday by juniors Kevin Larsen and Roberto Castro, who each shot three-under 68, Tech notched its second victory in six events this year. The third-ranked Yellow Jackets led wire-to-wire and finished at 27-under-par 825 on the Waikoloa Village Golf Club, 14 strokes ahead of No. 2 Oklahoma State (278 – 839). Southern California (275 – 840) was another shot back in third place.

Tringale, playing in just the sixth collegiate tournament, accomplished something this week that neither of his older teammates have done in 93 college tournaments combined. It was the first victory for a Yellow Jacket player in a team, stroke-play event since current PGA Tour pro Troy Matteson won the 2003 NCAA East Regional.

The Laguna Niguel, Calif., native, who shot 65-67 to take the lead after round two, finished at 11-under-par 202 and held off a charge from Travis Toyama of Hawaii (65 – 203) to win by a shot. OSU’s Pablo Martin shot 70 Friday and finished third at 9-under 204.

Larsen, from Santa Barbara, Calif., continued a stellar season as the nation’s fourth-ranked player, earning his fifth top-10 finish in five events by placing fourth at Waikoloa (8-under-par 205). Castro, an All-American from Alpharetta, Ga., posted his fifth top-20 finish at 5-under 208, tying for fifth place.

Tech senior Mike Barbosa notched his first top-20 showing of the year after a final-round 72 to tie for 17th place at one-under-par 212. Freshman Taylor Hall finished with a 74 Friday and tied for 23rd at even-par 213.

The Yellow Jackets are next in action Feb. 26-28 at the Puerto Rico Classic in Bayamon, P.R.
