Stillwater, Okla. – Paul Haley fired a 1-over-par 73 and earned his second top-10 finish in as many events this fall, but Georgia Tech stumbled to a 19-over-par score of 307 as a team and finished in seventh place at the Ping/Golfweek Preview Invitational.
The Yellow Jackets, ranked eighth in the nation according to Golfstat, began the final round one stroke off the lead of host Oklahoma State, which posted a 6-over 294 for the day, 14-over 878 for 54 holes and won the tournament by four strokes over UCLA (18-over 882).
Georgia finished third at 19-over 883, followed by Texas A&M and Augusta State (each at 23-over 887), Texas (27-over 891) and Tech (28-over 892).
Haley shot rounds of 75-73-73 for a 5-over-par total of 221 on the difficult 7,403-yard, par 72 Karsten Creek Golf Course. The senior from Dallas, Texas has finished in the top 10 in his last three events and four of his last five.
He was seven shots off the pace of Pontus Widegren of UCLA, the only individual to break par for 54 holes at 2-under 214. Widegren shot 69 Tuesday to win medalist honors by two shots over Georgia’s Hudson Swafford and Oklahoma State’s Peter Uihlein.
John-Tyler Griffin carded a 77 Tuesday and finished tied for 13th at 6-over 222. Kyle Scott added a 76 and tied for 21st at 8-over 224, while James White closed with an 81 and tied for 43rd at 15-over 231. Freshman Richard Werenski, who struggled to an 86 Tuesday, also tied for 43rd at 231.
The 54-hole event, played at the site of next spring’s NCAA Division I Championship, featured 14 teams in the 2010-11 Golfweek top 30 preseason rankings, including seven of the top 10 and four of the top five.
Tech returns to action Oct. 10-12 at the Brickyard Collegiate in Macon, Ga.
