Georgia Tech Golfers Finish Ninth at The Ridges

Sept. 14, 2003

JONESBOROUGH, Tenn. – Despite a 12th-place finish by rookie Roberto Castro, the Georgia Tech golf team was unable to improve its play on the final day and settled for a ninth place finish at the Bank of Tennessee at The Ridges in Jonesborough, Tenn. The 54-hole tournament was held at the par-72, 7,147-yard Ridges Golf and Country Club.

After sitting alone in sixth place after the first day of competition, the Yellow Jackets struggled on Sunday, finishing with a team score of 14-over-par 302, to complete play in the event at 293-288-302-883. That total was well off the pace of team champion Florida, which was one of only two teams under par for the tournament, as the Gators finished at 10-under-par, 290-280-284-854.

Castro recorded a solid debut for Tech, as he remained consistent throughout the weekend, finishing among three players tied for 12th place at even-par, 72-73-71-216. That score was 10 shots behind individual medalist Bill Haas of Wake Forest, who completed play at 10-under-par, 67-68-71-206.

Joining Castro in the top 20 of the tournament was junior Chan Wongluekiet, who was one of seven players tied for 18th place after a 54-hole score of 2-over-par, 71-71-76-218. Following Wongluekiet in the individual standings was fellow junior Nicholas Thompson, who tied with two other players for 31st place at 70-73-77-220.

The final two members of the Yellow Jacket contingent in the field were sophomores Thomas Jordan (80-71-81-232) and Mike Barbosa, (82-77-78-237) who tied for 77th and 86th place respectively.

Georgia Tech will return to action a week from Monday, when it travels to The Homestead’s Cascades Course in Hot Springs, Va., to compete in the Ping/Golfweek Preview Invitational. Full tournament results from The Bank of Tennessee at The Ridges are available at www.golfstatlive.com.
