Mike Barbosa, Whitney McCray, and Sam Morgan were named Georgia Tech Student-Athletes of the Week for Monday, November 14, 2005.
Barbosa, a senior from St. Petersburg, Fla., won all four of his matches last weekend as Georgia Tech advanced to the finals of the Hooters Collegiate Match Play Championship in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla. Among his foes were Alejandro Canizares of Arizona State, ranked 19th in the nation, and Brian Harman of Georgia, ranked No. 11, both of whom he downed 4 and 3. He also defeated Shawn Jasper of Missouri, 3 and 1, and Zack Miller of Stanford, 1-up.
McCray, a sophomore from Decatur, Ga., was Tech’s top performer at the Seminole Classic last weekend in Tallahassee, Fla., capturing both the singles and doubles titles. She teammed with Kelly Anderson to go 3-0 in doubles and also went 3-0 in singles to win the title. McCray is now 8-1 this fall with doubles partner Anderson and is now 6-3 in singles action.
Morgan, a senior from Gainesville, Ga., led Georgia Tech against ninth-ranked Minnesota last Saturday. He posted a pair of first-place finishes for the Yellow Jackets against the Golden Gophers in the 500- and 1000-yard freestyle events. In the 500 free, Morgan clocked a season-best time of 4:31.68, recording the ACC’s fifth-best time of the season in that event. In the 1000 free, the All-American posted the league’s third-fastest swim with a time of 9:14.83.
