Barbosa Leads Tech Golfers on Day One of Carpet Capital Collegiate

Rocky Face, Ga. – Led by a career-best round of 1-under-par, 71 by sophomore Mike Barbosa, the Georgia Tech golf team is in fifth place after 18 holes of play at the Carpet Capital Collegiate in Rocky Face, Ga. The three-day tournament is being contested for the 15th time at the par-72, 7,010-yard Farm Golf Club.

Barbosa turned in the top day of his Yellow Jacket career, as he recorded six birdies, including four on the back nine to finish with his 1-under-par, 39-32-71. That score ties him with four other players in fifth place, two shots behind individual leader Matt Hendrix of Clemson, who carded a 3-under-par, 34-35-69.

As a team, Tech finished with an 8-over-par score of 296 to stand alone in fifth place after the first day of competition. That total is seven shots behind team leader Clemson, which finished the day at 1-over-par, 289, as no teams were able to break par on Friday.

The next Yellow Jacket individual in the field is rookie Kevin Larsen, who had a solid day by finishing at 1-over-par, 36-37-73, in a round that included an eagle on the 15th hole. That score puts Larsen among nine players in 16th place. Junior Nicholas Thompson is the third Tech player in the individual standings, as he is tied for 35th place after an opening-round score of 3-over-par, 39-36-75.

The final two members of the Jacket contingent are junior Chan Wongluekiet (41-36-77) and sophomore Thomas Jordan (39-39-78) who are tied for 52nd and 63rd places respectively.

The Carpet Capital Collegiate will continue on Saturday with the second round of play. Full tournament results along with live scoring are available at www.golfstatlive.com.
