Mike Barbosa fired a two-under-par 70 and is tied for fourth place in the individual standings but the second-ranked Georgia Tech golf team stands ninth after one round at the Southern Highlands Collegiate Championship in Las Vegas, Nev.
Arizona State leads the 15-team field by two strokes with a score of 288, ahead of UCLA and South Carolina, each at 290. Tech, coming off a victory last weekend at the Puerto Rico Classic, is seven strokes back after posting a team score of 297.
Barbosa, a senior St. Petersburg, Fla., is four shots off the lead, which is shared by Mark Anderson of South Carolina and Daniel Im of UCLA, who both shot 66, but no other Yellow Jackets were below par.
Senior Nick Thompson and sophomore Roberto Castro each shot 74 and are tied for 31st place, while sophomore Kevin Larsen and senior Chan Song both carded 79 and are tied for 67th.
The tournament continues through Sunday at the par 72, 7,510-yard Southern HIghland Course.
