LEADING OFF: STORYLINES TO KNOW

  1. Georgia Tech (12-0) enters the weekend as the last remaining undefeated team in Division I (295 teams). It is the sixth time in school history Georgia Tech has started the season at least 10-0 (1985, 1987, 1997, 2003, 2006, 2016).
  2. Georgia Tech is 15-7 in the first game of its ACC opening series under head coach Danny Hall. The Jackets have won 15 of 22 ACC opening series under Hall, including 10 series sweeps.
  3. Georgia Tech leads the nation with 24 double plays turned. Middle infielders Wade Bailey (2B) and Connor Justus (SS) have been a part of 13 of the 24 double plays.
  4. The Yellow Jackets are ranked in five of the six NCAA Division I college baseball polls (Collegiate Baseball, Baseball America, NCBWA, Coaches, D1Baseball).
  5. The Jackets have scored 34 total runs in the fourth (17) and eighth innings this season (17), while allowing two total runs in those frames.
  6. Tech’s seven-man freshman pitching rotation is 6-0 with 1.20 ERA, allowing only eight earned runs in 60.0 innings. In three starts, freshman RHP Jonathan Hughes is 3-0 with a 0.50 ERA, allowing one earned run in 18.0 innings.
  7. Junior catcher Arden Pabst has thrown out 41 baserunners in three seasons behind the plate, throwing out runners 43 percent of the time.
  8. Matthew Gorst has recorded four saves. Gorst owns a 1.00 ERA, allowing one earned run and just eight baserunners with 14 strikeouts in 9.0 innings.
  9. Georgia Tech has used 12 different lineups to open the 2016 season. Only 2B Wade Bailey and SS Connor Justus have started every game at the same position.
  10. Brandon Gold and Tristin English have scored the game-winning runs in six of Tech’s 12 wins this season. Both have scored the winning run three times.

TECH IN ACC OPENERS
• This weekend will mark the first time that Georgia Tech will open its ACC schedule against the Florida State Seminoles. It’s also the Yellow Jackets’ first trip to Tallahassee since 2013; FSU and GT did not meet during the 2015 season.
• Georgia Tech is 15-7 in the first game of its ACC opening series under head coach Danny Hall.
• The Jackets have won 15 of 22 ACC opening series under Hall, including 10 series sweeps.

CH-CH-CHANGES
• Georgia Tech has used 12 different lineups to open the 2016 season. So far, head coach Danny Hall has used seven different combinations in the infield and 10 more in the outfield.
• Only three players have started every game for the Jackets – Wade Bailey, Connor Justus and Matt Gonzalez. Bailey and Justus are the only players to start in the same position in all 12 games.

UNDER PARR
• Junior LHP Ben Parr (3-0) is tied for the team lead in pitching victories with three in six appearances. Parr has come on in middle relief to keep opposing batters to two earned runs and a .219 batting average.

THE RULE OF 4’S
• Through the season’s first 12 games, Georgia Tech’s offensive production, which is averaging 7.5 runs per game, seems to heat up the fourth and eighth innings.
• The Jackets have scored 34 of their 90 runs in the fourth and eighth innings (17 in each), while allowing only two total runs in both frames.
• Tech has scored 53 total runs in the other seven regulation innings and three more in extra innings.

THEY ARE MERELY FRESHMEN
• Georgia Tech’s seven-man freshman pitching rotation continues to impress through the season’s first four weeks. Tech’s freshmen arms have accounted for six of the Jackets’ 12 wins this season.
• Tech’s rookie septet of Jonathan Hughes (3-0, 0.50 ERA), Burton Dulaney (1-0, 3.00), Jake Lee (1-0, 0.00, 1 Sv), Keyton Gibson (1-0, 3.38), Bobby Gauvreau (0-0, 0.00), Micah Carpenter (0-0, 0.00) and Robert Winborne (0-0, 0.00) is a combined 6-0 with a 1.20 ERA. The group has allowed only eight earned runs in 60.0 innings.

THE CLOSER
• Junior Matthew Gorst has already quadrupled his career saves output in 2016. Gorst has recorded four of Tech’s five save opportunities. Gorst owns a 1.00 ERA, allowing one earned run and just eight baserunners with 14 strikeouts in 9.0 innings.
• Gorst owns a 7:1 strikeout-to-walk ratio (14 K, 2 BB) this season. He had a career 1:1 ratio (48 K, 48 BB) in his first two seasons with the Yellow Jackets.

MEET IN THE MIDDLE
• Georgia Tech’s double play duo of 2B Wade Bailey and SS Connor Justus have been instrumental both in the field and at the plate through 12 games. Justus leads the Jackets in batting average (.435), runs scored (13) and hits (20), while Bailey is tied for the lead in runs scored (13), ranks second in hits (19) and third with a .373 average.
• The duo has teamed up to turn 13 of Tech’s 24 double plays this season – more double plays than 250 Division I baseball teams this season.
