STANFORD, Calif. – Led by a 2-under-par round by sophomore Nicholas Thompson, to take over the individual lead, the Georgia Tech golf team moved into a tie for first place after 36 holes of play at the Nelson Invitational. The 54-hole event is being contested at the par-71, 6,786-yard Stanford Golf Club in Stanford, Calif.
The Yellow Jackets were able to improve their first round score by one shot on Saturday, with a 2-under-par round of 282. That puts Tech at 3-under-par, 283-282=565 after two rounds. The Jackets are tied with ACC rival Duke (278-287=565), as the two teams hold a six-shot lead over Colorado State (281-290=571) entering Sunday’s final round.
Thompson followed his opening-round 66 with a steady 2-under-par round of 69 on Saturday to claim the individual lead in the event. Thompson is at 7-under-par, 66-69=135 for the tournament and holds a one-shot lead after 36 holes of play.
Joining Thompson in the event’s top 15 is freshman Thomas Jordan, who continued to play his best golf of the year, carding a 1-under-par 70 on Saturday to join four players tied for 13th place at even-par, 72-70=142. Senior Troy Matteson is the next Yellow Jacket in the top 20, as he is part of a six-way tie for 17th place at 1-over-par, 71-72=143. Sophomore Chan Wongluekiet finished the day with an even-par 71 and is among six players in 29th place at 74-71=145. The final member of the Tech contingent is freshman Michael Barbosa, who is tied for 82nd place at 76-79=156.
