Thompson Fires 68, Tech Golfers Sixth at Carpet Capital Collegiate

Rocky Face, Ga. – Georgia Tech junior golfer Nicholas Thompson fired a 4-under-par, 68 on Saturday and the Yellow Jackets carded a team round of 4-under-par, 284 to stand in sixth place after 36 holes of play at the Carpet Capital Collegiate in Rocky Face, Ga. The 54-hole event is being contested at the par-72, 7,010-yard Farm Golf Club.

Tech improved its team score by 12 shots over the first round, as red numbers were prevalent in round two. The Jackets are at 4-over-par, 296-284-580 after 36 holes and alone in sixth place. That score is 12 shots off the pace of team leader Clemson, which finished the day at 9-under-par, 279 and is at 8-under-par, 289-279-568 after two rounds.

Thompson bounced back from an opening-round 75 to post his 68 in a round that included five birdies and one bogey. The score moved Thompson into a tie for 13th place with seven other players at 1-under-par, 75-68-143. Tech rookie Kevin Larsen joins Thompson in the group at 1-under-par, as he carded a 2-under-par, 70 on Saturday to stand at 73-70-143. Those scores are seven shots behind individual leader Jason Hartwick of Texas, who blitzed the Farm layout for a 7-under-par, 65 in round two and is at 8-under-par, 71-65-136.

The next Yellow Jacket in the individual standings is sophomore Mike Barbosa, who is tied for 27th place at 2-over-par, 71-75-146. Junior Chan Wongluekiet was the third Tech player under par in the second round, finishing with a 1-under-par, 71, to stand in a tie for 39th place at 77-71-148. The final member of the Jacket contingent is sophomore Thomas Jordan, who is tied for 80th place at 78-81-159.

The Carpet Capital Collegiate will conclude on Sunday with the final round of place. Live scoring of the event is available at
