June 7, 2001

ATLANTA – Georgia Tech men’s golfers Kris Mikkelsen and Bryce Molder were both named to the Golf Coaches Association of America All-America Scholar List as announced by the GCAA today. The award recognizes excellence on the course and in the classroom.

All-America Scholars are recognized for their performances athletically and scholastically. To qualify for the honor, student athletes must be a junior or senior academically, maintain a minimum grade-point average, compete in at least 75 percent of his team’s varsity competitive rounds, and maintain a minumum stroke average set by the GCAA.

Molder, who just finished his career and ranks as one of the top players ever to don the white and gold graduated in May with a degree in management. He finished his Yellow Jacket career with the top scoring average in both NCAA and Georgia Tech history (70.69), along with recording the lowest single-season stroke average in both NCAA and Tech history (69.43).

Following the 2001 season, in which Molder won three individual titles and led Tech to an ACC Championship, he was named a first-team All-American for the fourth time, becoming only the second Tech athlete in any sport to be so honored and just the fourth player in college golf history to earn the distinction, joining former Tech standout David Duval in both of those categories.

Mikkelsen, a junior, was the Yellow Jackets’ top finisher at the NCAA Championships, as he placed in a tie for fourth in one of the top tournament performances of his career. His fourth-place finish earned him a spot on the GCAA honorable mention All-America team, as he was named an All-American for the first time in his Tech career. Mikkelsen finished the year ranked third on the team with a 73.54 stroke average, ans was ranked 26th in the final MasterCard Collegiate Golf Rankings, one ot three Tech players in the top 50.
