Tech's Matteson Named to U.S. Palmer Cup Team

ATLANTA — Georgia Tech junior golfer Troy Matteson was one of eight collegiate players selected to represent the United States on the 2002 Palmer Cup team in the its annual match with the team from Great Britain and Ireland, the Golf Coaches Association of America announced on Monday.

This year’s Palmer Cup will be played July 11-12 at Doonbeg Golf Club in County Clare, Ireland. The first day of competition will feature four-ball matches in the morning and foursome (alternate shot) matches in the afternoon. Day two will include singles matches both in the morning and afternoon.

Matteson is the thrid Yellow Jacket to be selected to compete in the event, joining both Bryce Molder (1998, ’99 & 2001) and Matt Kuchar (1998 and 1999) as participants. The event will be Matteson’s first appearance in international competition.

During the 2002 season, Matteson was the top-ranked Yellow Jackets’ leading player, recording three individual titles, while helping Tech to a school record six team titles on the year. He held the nation’s top individual ranking after his win at the Puerto Rico Classic.

Three players from the Atlantic Coast Conference were named to the team, including Matteson, Clemson’s D.J. Trahan and Wake Forest’s Bill Haas.

The Great Britain and Ireland team has not yet been announced.
