Tech Tidbits

1,201: Head coach Danny Hall enters Tuesday’s contest with 1,201 career wins in his 31 year collegiate head coaching career. In Tech’s 12-9 win in game one of the doubleheader versus Dartmouth on Saturday (Feb. 26) he recorded his 1,200th career win.

Tuesday afternoon’s contest versus Arkansas-Pine Bluff is the first-ever meeting between the Yellow Jackets and the Golden Lions on the diamond. UAPB is the second first-time opponent for the Jackets this season, as Tech hosted Bradley for the first-time ever back on Feb. 17.

Sophomore Kyle McCann blasted not one, not two, but three home runs in the Jackets’ 11-5 win over Dartmouth on Saturday afternoon. It is the 12th time that the Yellow Jackets have had a player hit three home runs in a single game in the program’s history and the first time since Kel Johnson hit three home runs in the win at Georgia Southern last season on Feb. 21.

Georgia Tech is on a season-high four game winning streak entering play this week. The Yellow Jackets, who won all four games last week, have totaled 40 runs over the current winning streak, an average of 10 runs per game.

The Yellow Jackets pitching has been lights out over the last four games, especially when it comes to strikeouts and walks. Over the last four games, Tech pitchers have combined to record 35 strikeouts and walk only seven batters, a 5:1 strikeout-to-walk ratio.

Sophomore Xzavion Curry (vs. Dartmouth), Connor Thomas (at Georgia Southern) and freshman Will Shirah (vs. Bradley) have all recorded a team-high six strikeouts in a single game on the mound this season for the Yellow Jackets.

Georgia Tech has two starters that have each posted a quality start for the Jackets this season. Connor Thomas went 7.0 innings, allowing just one run on four hits with six strikeouts in the road win at Georgia Southern on Tuesday, Feb. 20, while Xzavion Curry threw 7.0 scoreless innings with four hits and six strikeouts in the Friday night 10-0 win over Dartmouth on Feb. 23.

Heading into the eighth game of the young 2018 season, the Yellow Jackets’ Chase Murray ranks eighth nationally in hitting with an average of .567 on the season. Over the four games last week, Murray hit .706 (12-of-17) with two home runs, three doubles, two walks and seven RBIs.

In their weekend series versus Dartmouth last weekend, the Yellow Jackets hit a total of nine home runs over the three-game span. Kyle McCann (3), Chase Murray (2), Michael Guldberg (1), Kel Johnson (1), Austin Wilhite (1) and Tristin English (1) all contributed.

After two weeks of play in the 2018 season, the Yellow Jackets rank in the top 25 nationally in home runs per game (6th – 1.86), home runs (7th – 13), slugging percentage (8th – .563), shutouts (18th – 1), batting average (19th – .329), triples (21st – 3) and hits (22nd – 83).

On Deck

The Yellow Jackets wrap up their seven-game homestand with a three-game series versus Illinois-Chicago this weekend. Game times are Friday at 4 p.m., Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m.
