Macon, Ga. – Seth Reeves shot a final-round 3-under-par 69 to capture a share of the individual title, and Georgia Tech posted a 6-under-par 282 and finish as the runner-up at the seventh-annual Brickyard Collegiate golf tournament.
Bidding to win its third straight event of the fall and its second Brickyard title in three years, the No. 2-ranked Yellow Jackets shot their best score of the fall season and their best in seven Brickyard events (839, -25). But they could not overtake the host team, Mercer, which shot 7-under 281 Sunday and won by two (837, -27). The Bears surged into the lead Saturday with a 16-under-par round and matched the Jackets shot-for-shot on Sunday at the Brickyard at Riverside Course.
“Hats off to Mercer. They played lights out for two days and made a lot of putts,” said Tech coach Bruce Heppler. “We played pretty well for three days and still might have won if we could get a few more putts to drop for us, but that’s the way it goes.”
Reeves’ 69 gave him a 54-hole total of 207 (-9) and a share of his second title of the fall with Mercer’s Emmanuel Kontakis (70 Sunday) and Hans Reimer (69). It was Duluth, Ga., senior’s third collegiate championship and fifth in a college or amateur event.
Schniederjans, the 36-hole leader, shot 72 Sunday and finished one stroke out of the lead at 8-under 208. The Powder Springs, Ga., junior has tied for first once and finished one shot out of the lead twice in three events this fall.
Bo Andrews (Sr., Raleigh, N.C.) shot a 70 Sunday, while Anders Albertson (Jr., Woodstock, Ga.) carded a 71 and Richard Werenski (Sr., South Hadley, Mass.) a 73. Albertson tied for 16th individually at 3-under 213, while Andrews and Werenski finished in a tie for 32nd at 219.
Freshman Vincent Whaley (McKinney, Texas), making his collegiate debut and competing as an individual, shot 72 Sunday and tied for 55th place at 225.
Virginia Tech (849, -15) finished third and 10 shots behind the Yellow Jackets, followed by 8th-ranked Georgia (853, -11) and South Florida (860, -4) in the 14-team field.
Tech returns to action Oct. 18-20 when it hosts the United States Collegiate Championship at The Golf Club of Georgia in Alpharetta, Ga.
