Tech Slips to Third at Isleworth Collegiate

Oct. 26, 2004

ATLANTA – Nicholas Thompson shot two-under-par 70 Tuesday and finished fifth individually, and Roberto Castro placed fourth in the final results after carding a 75, but third-ranked Georgia Tech slipped to third place in the final standings of the Isleworth Collegiate Invitational at Windermere, Fla.

Scores rose with higher winds Tuesday at the tournament, which was played at the 7,426-yard, par 72 Isleworth Country Club.

Tech’s seven-over-par 295 was the fifth-best score of the day, but Georgia overcame the course length and conditions with a two-under-par 286 and won going away. The Bulldogs finished at one-under-par 863 for the tournament, 10 shots ahead of Oklahoma State, whose 291 score Tuesday left the Cowboys a distant second at 873. The Yellow Jackets were another shot back at 874.

Castro, a sophomore from Alpharetta, Ga., who was tied for the lead after 36 holes, fell to fourth place at four-under-par 212, five shots behind co-medalists Pablo Martin (72) of Oklahoma State and Chris Kirk (71) of Georgia (seven-under-par 209). Martin Ureta of North Carolina (71) finished third at five-under 211. Thompson, the senior from Coral Springs, Fla., whose 70 led Tech’s effort Tuesday, was alone in fifth at two-under 214.
