ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech men’s golf team will look to capture its third-straight team title this week when it returns to action at the Puerto Rico Classic, Feb. 24-26. The 54-hole event will be contested at the Rio Mar Country Club in Palmer, Puerto Rico.
The top-ranked Yellow Jackets are the defending champions in the event after carding a team score of 3-under-par 861 a year ago, placing three players in the event’s top-15 individuals, led by Bryce Molder in third place. Troy Matteson and Kris Mikkelsen were both part of a tie for 15th place.
Tech is coming off of an outstanding performance just last weekend at the Waikoloa Intercollegiate, as the Jackets won the tournament for the third time in four years, finishing as the only team under par with a three-day total of 4-under-par, 860.
The Jackets were led in the event by junior Troy Matteson, who captured his first career individual title with a total of 6-under-par, 67-70-73=210. Matteson was joined in the top 10 by senior Kris Mikkelsen (71-72-74=217) and freshman Chan Wongluekiet (71-73-73=217), both of whom were part of a tie for ninth place.
Thus far in the 2001-02 season, the Jackets have already won three tournaments and have two players ranked in the top 25 in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin Ratings, as Matteson is the nation’s third-ranked player, while Mikkelsen is currently rated 20th.
