THE FLATS – After a week off, Georgia Tech’s golf team has taken a spring break trip to Florida, a week which culminates Monday and Tuesday with the Valspar Invitational at Floridian in Palm City, Fla.
This is the first time the fourth-ranked (Golfweek/Sagarin Index) Yellow Jackets have played in the two-day event, in which the 15 teams will play 36 holes Monday and 18 Tuesday at the 7,076-yard, par 71 Floridian Golf Club. The field includes seven of the nation’s top 25 teams, and 13 of the top 50, including No. 2 Oklahoma State, No. 6 Illinois and No. 8 Houston.
The Yellow Jackets are coming off a 12th-place finish at last week’s Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters in Las Vegas. Tech has finished second at the Puerto Rico Classic and seventh at the Amer Ari Invitational in its other two spring events. The SHC event, played on a 7,510-yard course in extreme winds, put a dent in all the competitors’ scoring averages.
Junior Ollie Schniederjans remains Tech’s top-ranked individual, No. 6 in the Golfweek/Sagarin Index, followed by senior Seth Reeves (21), junior Anders Albertson (63), senior Richy Werenski (106) and senior Bo Andrews (153). Those five will compete in the Floridian.
Schniederjans (Powder Springs, Ga.), who remains ranked No. 2 in the Haskins Award watch standings, was Tech’s top finisher in Las Vegas, closing with a 2-under-par 70, the Yellow Jackets’ only subpar round on a golf course that yielded only 21 throughout the weekend. He tied for 12th place individually after a 10th-place showing in Puerto Rico and has a team-leading 70.25 stroke average
Like Schniederjans, Reeves (Duluth, Ga.) won a pair of events in the fall, but has finished no higher than a tie for 16th in the spring and has a 71.24 stroke average. Albertson (Woodstock, Ga.) tied for sixth at Puerto Rico and has a 71,79 average, while Andrews (Raleigh, N.C.) tied for third in Puerto Rico and has a 72.95 average, and Werenski (South Hadley, Mass.) posted a top finish this spring of 22nd at Puerto Rico and averaged 72.94.
