Tech Grabs 36-hole Lead at Oregon Duck Invitational

March 22, 2005

ATLANTA – Georgia Tech took advantage of less blustery conditions in the afternoon round to post a seven-under-par 281, led by Roberto Castro’s four-under 68, and the No. 2-ranked Yellow Jackets have a two-stroke lead after 36 holes at the Oregon Duck Invitational in Eugene, Ore.

Tech shot 291 (3-over-par) in the morning round at the Eugene Country Club, which was played in 45-degree rain showers and 10-mile-per-hour wind and was in sixth place, but leapfrogged them all in the afternoon, when the rain stopped. Afternoon conditions were overcast with occasional sun breaks, 57 degree temperatures and no wind.

The Yellow Jackets have a 36-hole score of 572, four under par, followed by Washington and host Oregon at 574, San Diego State at 575, Nevada at 577 and Pepperdine at 579. The final 18 holes will be played Tuesday.

Castro, a sophomore from Alpharetta, Ga., shot 71 in the morning round, and is tied for third place with James Lepp of Washington at five-under-par 139, three shots off the pace of Pepperdine’s Michael Putnam (70-66 – 136). Nicholas Thompson, a senior from Coral Springs, Fla., shot 74 in the morning, 69 in the afternoon, and is tied for 11th at one-under 143.

Junior Mike Barbosa posted rounds of 75 and 70 and is tied for 21st at 145, followed by senior Chan Song (72-74), who is tied for 25th at 146. Sophomore Kevin Larsen went 74-77 and is tied for 57th at 151.
