ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech men’s golf team continued its solid team effort and has all five players in the Top 15 to stand in second place after 36 holes of play at the Golf World/Palmetto Dunes Invitational. The 54-hole event is being contested at the 6,651-yard, par-72 Arthur Hills Course in Hilton Head, S.C.
The Yellow Jackets improved their play over the first round by six shots and fired their second-best team round of the year, by carding a 16-under-par total of 272. Techs day-two team score was the lowest in the tournament on the second day of play, and the Jackets are just seven shots off the lead at 26-under-par, 278-272-550. Georgia continues to lead in the team competition, as the Bulldogs had another strong day and are at 33-under-par, 268-275-543.
Georgia Techs individuals in the field continue to be led by senior Bryce Molder (Conway, Ark.), who fired a 5-under-par round of 67 on Saturday and is part of a two-way tie for sixth place at 8-under-par, 69-67-136. Molder trails individual leader Anders Hultman of Oklahoma State (66-66-132) by four shots entering the final round of play.
The next Jacket individuals in the field are sophomore Troy Matteson (Austin, Texas), and junior Kris Mikkelsen (Woodstock, Ga.), both of whom carded matching 68s in the second round and are part of a four-way tie for 11th place after 36 holes. Both Matteson and Mikkelsen have matching scores of 6-under-par 70-68-138 after two rounds.
The Tech contingent in the field is rounded out by senior Wes Latimer (Woodstock, Ga.) and junior Matt Weibring (Plano, Texas), who are two of six players tied for 15th place at 5-under-par, 139. Latimer shot a second round score of 3-under-par 69 to stand at 70-69-139, while Weibring carded a 2-under-par 70 and is at 69-70-139.
The Golf World/Palmetto Dunes Invitational will conclude tomorrow with the final round of play beginning at 7:30 a.m. The Yellow Jackets will play in threesomes with Georgia and Oklahoma State.
