Tech Golfers in Sixth at Augusta State Invitational

ATLANTA – Georgia Tech’s golf team scored a 16-under-par 272 in the second 18 holes Saturday, the low score of the day in either round, and stands in sixth place after two rounds of the Cleveland Golf/Augusta State Invitational at Augusta, Ga.

The tournament, which is being played on the 6,875-yard, par-72 Champions Course at Forest Hills Golf Club, was delayed 22 minutes by lightning Saturday as the 17-team field completed 36 holes as darkness fell. The final 18 holes will be played Sunday. Live scoring is available on www.golfstatlive.com.

The 16th-ranked Yellow Jackets were led in the second round by sophomore Nicholas Thompson with an 8-under-par 64, and by defending NCAA champion Troy Matteson, who carded a 4-under 68. Matteson is in a tie for 11th place at 5-under-par 139 (71-68), four shots behind James Heath (68-67-135) and Oliver Wilson of Augusta State (68-67-135). Thompson, who shot 77 in the first round, is tied for 24th at 3-under 141.

Top-ranked Clemson holds the team lead at 24-under-par 552 (273-279), one shot in front of host Augusta State (279-274-553). Wake Forest is in third (276-281-557), Oklahoma State fourth (275-283-558) and Georgia fifth (277-283-560). Tech shot 290 in its first round and has a 36-hole total of 566).

Sophomore Chan Wongluekiet is tied for 29th at 2-under 142 after a second-round 68 for Tech, and senior Adam Cranford is tied for 40th at even-par 144 after shooting a pair of 72s. Freshman Thomas Jordan is tied for 71st at 149.
