Tech Golfers Finish Fifth at U.S. Collegiate Championships

TUCSON, Ariz. – The Georgia Tech golf team was unable to rally on the final day of play and moved up one spot place fifth at the Ping/U.S. Collegiate Championships in Tucson, Ariz. The 54-hole tournament was contested at the par-72, 7,094-yard Tucson National Golf Club.

The top-ranked Yellow Jackets finished the final round of play with a 1-over-par score of 289 and completed play in the ten-team tournament with a three-round total of 7-over-par, 282-300-289=871. That score left Tech 12 strokes behind team champion Texas, which finished the tourney at 5-under-par, 278-290-291=859.

Tech placed three players in the top 20, as Matt Weibring led the Jacket individual with his third Top 10 finish of the year. Weibring was alone in seventh place after a 54-hole total of 2-under-par, 69-73-72=214. That score was 10 shots off the pace of individual medalist Hunter Mahan of Oklahoma State, who finished at 12-under-par, 62-72-69=204.

Freshman Nick Thompson was the second Yellow Jacket in the Top 10, as finished tied with two other players for 10th place at 2-over-par, 68-78-72=218, bouncing back from a second-round 78 to card an even-par 72 on Sunday. Kris Mikkelsen was the third Tech player in the Top 20, as he was part of a four-way tie for 16th place following a round of 2-over-par, 74 on the final day of play. The senior finished the event at 4-over-par, 72-74-74=220.

The Yellow Jackets will now have two weeks off before returning to action on April 19 at the Atlantic Coast Conference Championship at the Old North State Club in Uwharrie Point, N.C.
