Rocky Face, Ga. – Paul Haley fired a 2-under-par 70, and James White added a 1-under 71 Friday, pacing Georgia Tech to a 1-under team total of 287 and fourth position after the first round of the Carpet Capital Collegiate at The Farm Golf Club.

John-Tyler Griffin shot a 72, while Kyle Scott and Richard Werenski added 74s for Tech, which is seven shots behind Alabama (8-under 280). Clemson shot 5-under 283 and is in second place, followed by Auburn at 3-under 285. Georgia is in fifth place at even-par 288.

“Not a bad start,” said head coach Bruce Heppler, whose team played four of its six rounds of team qualifying at The Farm in the last week. “The course played more difficult today than it did during qualifying, but we’re in good shape with a couple good rounds. With the quality of the field here, I didn’t expect that 1-under would be leading, but we’re in there.”

Haley, a senior from Dallas, Texas, posted his best score on the course. He finished in a tie for 14th place last year with scores of 72-73-71. A U.S. Amateur qualifier last month, Haley has broken par in four of his last five collegiate rounds dating back to the 2010 NCAA Southeast Regional.

White, a junior from Acworth, Ga., has matched or broken par in five of his last six rounds, while Griffin, a senior from Wilson, N.C., ranked among the nation’s top 30 players, has done so in six of seven rounds. Werenski, a freshman from South Hadley, Mass., who made match play at the U.S. Amateur, finished his round with a birdie and played solidly in his first collegiate round.

Tech will be among the final groups teeing off in Saturday’s second round, beginning on the 10th hole at 8:40 a.m. The final round of the 54-hole event is Sunday.
