Macon, Ga. – Kyle Scott fired a 4-under-par 68 to share the first-round individual lead, and James White added a 1-under 71 Friday to lift Georgia Tech into a fourth-place tie after the first round of the Brickyard Collegiate golf tournament.

In the third of four fall events for 8th-ranked Georgia Tech, the Yellow Jackets also counted a 75 from John-Tyler Griffin and a 77 from Minghao Wang in posting a team score of 291, four strokes off the pace of Georgia. The Bulldogs counted a 68 from Hudson Swafford and a 69 from Harris English to take a 1-stroke lead over North Florida (288).

Reigning NCAA champion Augusta State, riding a 68 from Carter Newman, is in third place at 289. The Jackets are tied with Clemson, another two shots back. Chattanooga and Texas-Arlington are tied for sixth at 292.

Scott started slowly, bogeying two of his first five holes before getting a birdie at the par-5 sixth. But the senior from Johannesburg, South Africa got hot on the back nine, recording birdies on four straight holes (12 through 15) and adding another at the last, posting a round one shot off his career best as a Yellow Jacket.

Scott, Swafford and Newman are one stroke ahead of a group of four other players in the individual race.

White, who has struggled in Tech’s first two events this fall, matched his previous best in six rounds by getting birdies on the final two holes. He is in a three-way tie for 10th place individually.

Freshman Seth Reeves, making his collegiate debut by playing as an individual this week, fired a 2-under 70 and is tied for eighth place.

Griffin, a senior from Wilson, N.C., played himself out of a 6-over-par hole on the front nine with four birdies on the back in posting his 75. Wang, a junior from Reunion, Fla., making his first start of the fall, had just one birdie on his card.
