THE FLATS – It was a lean week for action on the professional tours, but Roberto Castro and Matt Kuchar, riding their top 30 finishes in last year’s FedEx Cup race, were in the field for the Mexico Championship in the first event in this year’s World Golf Championship series.
Kuchar tied for 20th place with a 5-under-par total of 279 and picked up a significant chunk of points to move up from 91st to 73rd in the FedEx Cup standings. Castro tied for 45th at 285 (+1), moving up five spots to 131rd.
Five former Tech golfers currently stand among the top 125 in FedEx Cup points, which is the cutoff to participate in the first round of the playoffs that begin in August. Ollie Schniederjans is 43rd, Stewart Cink is 50th, Cameron Tringale is 99th and Richy Werenski is 100th. None of those three played last weekend, but will be back this week when the Tour resumes the Florida swing at the Valspar Championship in Palm Harbor along with Kuchar and Bryce Molder.
