Nissan #ProJackets Golf Report

Nov. 1, 2016

THE FLATS – Matt Kuchar and Roberto Castro posted solid finishes at least weekend’s World Golf Championship event, the HSBC Champions in Shanghai, China. Kuchar (283, -5) tied for 21st and Castro (286, -2) tied for 30th, but the highlight of the weekend was a hole-in-one by Kuchar in the third round.

A prize – a shiny Cadillac – stood by the par-3 17th tee for any competitor who made a hole-in-one, but Kuchar didn’t get the car for his hole-in-one. As he stood on the tee waiting his turn to hit when his caddie noticed the fine print. Because the tee had been moved forward Saturday in the third round, the hole played only 193 yards. The notice next to the car said it would not be offered as a prize on this day because the hole had to be at least 200 yards.

John Wood, his caddie, nudged Kuchar and jokingly told him, ”Don’t worry about a hole-in-one today. We don’t get the car.”

”And then he makes it,” Wood said.

Timing was everything. An ace is cool on any occasion, especially a World Golf Championship when it leads to a 4-under 68. Kuchar was no less wistful.

”That was probably one of the saddest hole-in-ones I’ve ever had,” he said. ”Most of the time, a hole-in-one you’re just overjoyed with excitement. But then there’s a car sitting there, the most beautiful Cadillac on a tee.”

Elsewhere on the PGA Tour: Of the five former Yellow Jackets competing in the Sanderson Famrs Championship, only Richy Werenski made the cut, finishing in 75th place after a 3-over-par 291. David Duval played his first Tour event in more than a year, carding 73-70 to miss the weekend, but did drain this 33-foot putt for a birdie to get him to 4-under-par during his second round.

The Tour is in Las Vegas this week for the Shriners Hospital for Children Open. Stewart Cink, Ollie Schniederjans and Cameron Tringale are in the field along with Molder and Werenski.

Champions Tour: Larry Mize, the 1987 Masters Champion and in his eighth year on the PGA Tour Champions, tied for 25th last weekend in the PowerShares QQQ Championship, the first of three events in the first-ever Charles Schwab Cup Playoffs. The finish (214, -2) left him in 41st place in the Schwab Cup standings, allowing him to move on to this week’s Dominion Charity Classic in XXX, Va. The top 36 after this weekend will qualify for the season-ending Charles Schwab Cup Championship, Nov. 11-13 in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Mize qualified for the playoffs on the heels of a strong finishes in recent weeks that lifted him from 63rd to 39th on the Schwab Cup points standings. He finished third in each of the last two regular season events, and has three top-20 finishes in majors this year, his best work in more than four years.

Web.com Tour: Three former Yellow Jackets – Seth Reeves, J.T. Griffin and Drew Czuchry – have advanced to the second stage of the tour’s qualifying school. Reeves and Griffin both medaled at their respective events, Griffin finishing alone in first (275, -13) at Dothan, Ala., and Reeves tying for first with four other players (277, -11) at Pine Mountain, Ga. Czuchry tied for 17th at Pine Mountain to advance to the second stage.

Second stage qualifying will be held this weekend in Beaumont, Calif., and Mobile, Ala., and Nov. 8-11 at Brooksville, Fla., McKinney, Texas and Plantation, Fla. The final stage of Q-school is set for Dec. 8-11 at Orange County National in Winter Garden, Fla.
