THE FLATS – Richy Werenski and Roberto Castro, two of seven former Georgia Tech stars in the field for last weekend’s Safeway Open in Napa, Calif., tied for 35th place as the only Yellow Jackets to make the cut.

It was a solid debut for Werenski, who finished second in last year’s Web.com Tour earnings to gain his PGA Tour card. He shot 8-under-par 280 at the Safeway Open to earn a little over $23,000. Ollie Schniederjans, also making his rookie season debut after finishing sixth on the Web.com Tour in 2016, struggled to a 75-77 in the opening two rounds.

Castro, who advanced to the Tour Championship this year and finished 22nd in FedEx Cup points, was the only veteran former Jacket to make the cut, matching Werenski’s score. Stewart Cink, Bryce Molder, Matt Kuchar and Cameron Tringale were all in the field.

Champions Tour: There was better news on the Senior Circuit, however, as Larry Mize tied for third place for the second consecutive week, this time at the SAS Championship in Cary, N.C. Mize, the 1987 Masters champion, has more than doubled his 2016 earnings over the past two weekends to $449,971 and boosted himself to 39th in Schwab Cup points. He is a collective 25-under-par over his last six rounds.

Web.com Tour: Three former Yellow Jackets – Seth Reeves, J.T. Griffin and Drew Czuchry – advanced to the second stage of the tour’s qualifying school last week. Reeves and Griffin both medaled at their respective events, Griffin finishing alone in first (275, -13) at Dothan, Ala., and Reeves tying for first with four other players (277, -11) at Pine Mountain, Ga. Czuchry tied for 17th at Pine Mountain to advance to the second stage.

First stage qualifying was conducted at 12 different venues. Second stage qualifying will be held Nov. 1-4 in Beaumont, Calif., and Mobile, Ala., and Nov. 8-11 at Brooksville, Fla., McKinney, Texas and Plantation, Fla. The final stage of Q-school is set for Dec. 8-11 at Orange County National in Winter Garden, Fla.

PGA Tour Latino America: Bo Andrews made his first start of 2016 on the PGA Tour LatinoAmerica, tying for 29th place (283, +3) at the Roberto De Vicenzo Punta del Este Open in Maldonado, Urugray. The tour moves to Lima, Peru this week.
