Nissan #ProJackets Golf Report

Jan. 19, 2016

THE FLATS – Three Georgia Tech players opened their calendar 2016 campaigns over the weekend as the PGA Tour held its first full-field event of the year with the Sony Hawai’i Open in Honolulu, Hawai’i.

Matt Kuchar opened with a strong performance, tying for 12th place with scores of 71-66-62-69—280 (-12) on the par-70 Waialiae Country Club course, eight shots off the pace of Fabian Gomez, who won in a playoff over Brandt Snedeker. Kuchar surpassed $34 million in career earnings with his check of more than $77,000, and jumped 38 spots to No. 102 in FedEx Cup points.

Stewart Cink also had a good weekend, tying for 42nd place with rounds of 69-67-69-66—271 (-9), and moved up to No. 100 in the FedEx Cup points race. Roberto Castro missed the cut, but remains No. 56 in the points standings.

The Tour begins its West Coast swing this weekend at the Career Builder Challenge at PGA West in LaQuinta, Calif. Kuchar was the runner-up in this event last year, one shot behind Bill Haas, while Cameron Tringale and Nicholas Thompson both posted good performances. Castro, Cink and Kuchar are all in the field this week, while Chesson Hadley, Bryce Molder, Tringale and Ollie Schniederjans all make their 2016 debuts. Schniederjans, who has a Web.com Tour card, is playing on a sponsor’s exemption.
