Men's Golf Team Takes Lead After 36 Holes At The Carpet Capital Collegiate

ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech men’s golf team rallied from an eight-stroke deficit and turned in a solid team effort en route to claiming the team lead after 36 holes of play at the Carpet Capital Collegiate. The 54-hole event is being contested at the 6,906-yard, par-72 layout of The Farm in Rocky Face, Ga.

After a 2-under-par opening round of 286, the Yellow Jackets put together an impressive 8-under-par effort on the second day of play, posting a 280 in blustery conditions to stand at 10-under-par 286-280-566 after two rounds. Tech leads first round leader and top-ranked Georgia (278-291-569) by three strokes entering the final round of play.

Tech was led in the individual standings for the second day by senior Bryce Molder (Conway, Ark.), who fired a 4-under-par round of 68 and is tied with Kyle Thompson of South Carolina in second place at 6-under-par 70-68-138. Both Molder and Thompson trail individual leader Nick Cassini of Georgia by one stroke entering the final day. Cassini finished the second round at 7-under-par 65-72-137.

Following Molder in the individual standings is junior Kris Mikkelsen (Woodstock, Ga.), who improved his play from day one in carding a 2-under-par 70 on Saturday and is one of four players tied for 12th place at 1-under-par 73-70-143. Right behind Mikkelsen in the field is fellow third-year player Matt Weibring (Plano, Texas), who is part of a six-way logjam in 16th place at even-par 71-73-144.

Sophomore Troy Matteson (Plano, Texas) is part of a four player tie for 25th at 2-over-par, 77-69-146, following a 3-under-par 69 in the second round. Rounding out the Yellow Jacket contingent in the field is senior Wes Latimer (Woodstock, Ga.), who is one of seven players tied for 29th place at 3-over-par, 72-75-147.

The Carpet Capital Collegiate will conclude tomorrow with the final round of play. Georgia Tech will begin its third round at 9:28 a.m., in threesomes with Georgia and Clemson.
