Senior Bryce Molder alone in second place after the first round of play
ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech men’s golf team struggled in the first round of play and is in 13th place after 18 holes at the Ping/Golfweek Preview. The 54-hole, two-day event is being contested at the 7,100-yard, par-72 Duke University Golf Club in Durham, N.C., which will also be the site of the 2001 NCAA Men’s Golf Championships.
The Yellow Jackets finished the day with a team total of 300, which puts them 13 strokes off the pace of team leader Georgia, which finished the first round with a score of 287, and was the only team to finish the first round under par.
Tech’s individuals in the field were led by senior Bryce Molder (Conway, Ark.), who fired a 4-under-par 33-35-68 and trails individual leader Kevin Haefner of Auburn (34-33-67) by one stroke.
Following Molder in the individual standings is junior Matt Weibring (Plano, Texas), who is part of an eight-way tie for 49th place at 4-over-par 40-36-76, and sophomore Adam Cranford (Augusta, Ga.), who is part of a five-way tie for 57th at 5-over-par, 36-41-77.
Rounding out the Yellow Jacket contingent in the field are junior Kris Mikkelsen (Woodstock, Ga.), and senior Wes Latimer (Woodstock, Ga.), both of whom are part of a group of six players in 69th place at, 8-over-par, 40-39-79.
The Ping/Golfweek Preview will continue this afternoon with the second round of play, and will conclude tomorrow with the third and final round of competition.
