ATLANTA (Nov. 5) – Georgia Tech’s golf team ended the first day of the Golf World/Palmetto Dunes Invitational nine-strokes under par and nine strokes behind the University of Texas, the first-day leader at 16-under par at the par 72, 6,651-yard Aruthur Hills Golf Course in Hilton Head Island, S.C.
Seniors Matt Kuchar (Lake Mary, Fla.) and Carlton Forrester (Gainesville, Ga.) each fired 3-under-par 69s to place in a tie for 11th after the first round. Junior Bryce Molder (Conway, Ark.) was one stroke back at 70 and tied for 20th, while sophomore Matt Weibring (Plano, Texas) was tied for 51st with a 73. Redshirt-freshman Troy Matteson (Austin, Texas) was tied for 75th with a 76.
Texas shot a 272 with four golfers shooting in the 60s as U.S. Amateur champion David Gossett led the way with a 67. South Carolina was in second at 278, Georgia was third with a 279, North Carolina was fourth with a 280 and Tech was one stroke back at 281.
The Jackets entered the tournament ranked No. 2 in the Golfweek computer rankings and No. 4 in the MasterCard Collegiate Golf Foundation poll.
Play continues with 18 holes Saturday and Sunday.
