ATLANTA (Nov. 7) – Georgia Tech’s golf team finished with its fourth-best tournament score in school history, but fell by four strokes to Georgia in the Golf World/Palmetto Dunes Invitational Sunday at the par 72, 6,651-yard Arthur Hills Golf Course in Hilton Head Island, S.C. Both squads entered the final day tied, as Georgia shot a 5-under 283 to edge out Tech, which shot a 1-under 287.
Tech finished second with a 23-under-par 281-273-287-841 score as a team, which ranks as the fourth-best 54-hole tournament score in the Jacket record book. Tech shot the second-best one-day score in school history Saturday with a 273 to tie Georgia heading into the final day of action.
Senior Matt Kuchar (Lake Mary, Fla.) finished tied-for-seventh after shooting a 9-under-par 69-69-69-207 to lead the Jackets. His score tied for the fourth-best individual 54-hole tournament in school history. Kuchar registered his 19th career top-10 finish and second in four tournaments this year. Junior Bryce Molder (Conway, Ark.) ended with a 5-under 70-69-72-211 to place in a tie for 18th and mark his 26th top-20 finish 30 career tournaments. He has four top-20 placements in all four tournaments this fall.
Senior Carlton Forrester (Gainesville, Ga.) placed in a tie for 25th after shooting a 69-67-77-213 to finish 3-under for the tournament. Sophomore Matt Weibring (Plano, Texas) finished two strokes under par after shooting a 73-70-71-214 to finish tied for 30th. Redshirt-freshman Troy Matteson (Austin, Texas) ended in a tie for 55th after shooting a 3-over 76-68-75-219.
Erik Compton of Georgia was the tournament medalist after shooting a 66-66-71203 to pace the Bulldogs. Texas finished in the team standings at 22-under-par, followed by Clemson as 21-under and Arizona State at 18-under.
The Jackets will next be in action February 11-13 to start the spring campaign at the Waikoloa Intercollegiate in Waikoloa, Hawaii.
