ATLANTA – Former U.S. Amateur champion Matt Kuchar won the U.S. Open sectional qualifying event Monday at Ansley Golf Club at Settindown Creek in Roswell, Ga., and has qualified for the upcoming championship in La Jolla, Calif.
Kuchar, a three-time All-American at Georgia Tech between 1996-2000, joins another Tech All-American, Stewart Cink, who was exempt into the field, for the championship which will be played at the Torrey Pines Golf Club’s South Course beginning next Wednesday.
A native of Lake Mary, Fla., has four top-10 finishes on the PGA Tour this year, has earned nearly $1 million and stands 52nd in FedEx Cup points. Cink has nine top-10 finishes, has earmed more than $2.5 million and stands fifth in FedEx Cup points.
In Monday’s qualifying at Settindown Creek, Kuchar shot 64-65 (15-under-par) to tie Jason Bohn for top honors. Rising Tech senior Taylor Hall failed to qualify there after carding 72-73.
Tech senior Cameron Tringale (70-71 at Columbus, Ohio) and former Tech All-Americans Troy Matteson (71-70 at Columbus, Ohio) and Nicholas Thompson (70-73 at Cordova, Tenn.) failed to qualify.
