Tech Tidbits

Georgia Tech sophomore Chase Murray is off to a great start in his second season on The Flats as he leads the ACC and the team in hitting with a .489 batting average on the year. Murray has gone 22-for-45 at the plate this season with two home runs, four doubles, four walks, 11 RBIs, nine runs, and two stolen bases.

Wednesday’s contest at Georgia State is only the second road game for the Jackets this season and the second contest versus an in-state foe thus far in 2018. GT is a perfect 1-0 on the road in 2018 and a perfect 1-0 against its in-state foes with a 7-1 road win at Georgia Southern on Feb. 20 in Statesboro, Ga.

No. 3 Wade Bailey has set the tone for the Tech lineup as the lead-off hitter all season long. He is hitting .348, has scored 11 runs and has an on-base percentage of .434 on the year. More impressive, however, is the fact that the senior second basemen has reached base safely in all 11 games this season, tops on the team. In addition, dating back to last season, Bailey has reached base safely in 38 straight games.

Head coach Danny Hall, who is in his 25th season as the skipper for the White and Gold, is only four wins away from picking up win number 1,000 in a Jackets uniform. He enters Wednesday night’s contest with 996 career wins as the head coach at Georgia Tech.

After opening up the 2018 season playing 10 out of 11 games at home at Russ Chandler Stadium, the Yellow Jackets kick off a five-game road swing on Wednesday night at Georgia State. Tech will stay on the road to open up ACC play at Clemson this weekend, March 9-11, and then wrap up the five-game road trip at Auburn on March 13.

The Jackets rank second overall in the ACC in six statistical categories – batting average (.332), doubles (21), hits (128), home runs (17), slugging percentage (.545) and walks allowed per nine innings (2.97). Tech also leads the conference in shutouts (3) and triples (5).

Georgia Tech, who will be facing a right-handed starter in the day game versus Georgia State on Wednesday at 5 p.m., is 7-2 versus right-handed starters this season and 7-3 overall in day games on the year. The Jackets are also 7-0 when holding its opponent to five runs or less and 7-0 when making one error or less in the field defensively.

The Yellow Jackets have a total of eight pitchers that have an ERA of under 2.00 entering play this week. Andy Archer, Micah Carpenter, Joseph Mannelly and Robert Winborne all have an ERA of 0.00 out of the bullpen for Tech this season, while Jared Datoc (0.96) and Jonathan Hughes (1.35) are both under two in a combined eight appearances on the season. Starters Xzavion Curry (1.00) and Connor Thomas (1.42) have also posted ERA’s below 2.00 thus far this season.

Georgia Tech enters Wednesday’s game versus Georgia State on a nine-game winning streak over the Panthers. The Jackets have swept the two-game season series with the Panthers in each of the last three years and took a 16-5 win in their lone meeting in 2013. Tech last lost to Georgia State 5-4 in Panthersville back on March 7, 2012.

This season, Georgia Tech is 4-1 overall when recording 10 or more strikeouts in a game. Offensively, Tech is 5-2 on the season when posting 10 or more hits at the plate in a contest. Overall, the Jackets are averaging 11.6 hits per contest this season.

On Deck

Tech will remain on the road for ACC play at Clemson on March 9-11, before playing a midweek contest at Auburn on March 13.
