Day 1 Results: Prelims | Finals
THE FLATS – The Georgia Tech swimming and diving team set three new school records, recorded a total of eight NCAA `B’ qualifying times and registered two NCAA Zone `B’ Diving scores on day one of the GT Invitational on Thursday, Nov. 17, at the McAuley Aquatic Center.
Redshirt-senior Chiara Ruiu set a new school record, not once but twice, in the 200 IM. She first broke the record with her time of 2:00.58 in the prelims, besting her previous school record of 2:00.97. She then went on to break the record once again in the 200 IM finals, touching the wall in a time of 1:59.88 for a fourth-place finish. Both of her times in the 200 IM were NCAA `B’ qualifying times.
The third school record fell in the final race of the night, as the relay team of Maddie Paschal, Ruiu, Kaitlin Kitchens and Iris Wang touched the wall in a time of 3:39.82 in the 400 medley relay, beating the previous record of 3:39.92 by a tenth of a second.
Wang also matched her career-high with an NCAA `B’ qualifying time of 22.90 in the 50 free finals event.
Diver Matt Casillas recorded an NCAA Zone `B’ qualifying score in both the 1-meter prelims (324.85) and the finals (335.80), while Rodrigo Quadros Correia recorded an NCAA `B’ qualifying time in both the 200 IM prelims (1:48.00) and the finals (1:46.19).
Correia also touched the wall in a record time of 46.62 in the 100 back, swimming it in the lead-off spot in the 400 medley relay finals event.
Alex Kimpel also recorded an NCAA `B’ qualifying in the 200 IM with a finals time of 1:48.61, while Colt Williamson recorded an NCAA `B’ qualifying time of 4:22.54 in the 500 free prelims and also an NCAA `B’ qualifying time of 4:23.87 in the 500 finals.
A total of 29 Tech swimmers reached the finals in the individual events on day one of the three-day meet, while two male divers competed in the 1-meter finals event on Thursday night.
The men’s team will enter day two of competition tomorrow morning in third-place overall with 265 points, while the women’s team sits in seventh overall with 144 points.
“I’m really happy with the day; we started off the three-day meet really well,” said head coach Courtney Shealy Hart. “We set multiple school records and I’m really excited about that. I’m looking forward to tomorrow morning; we know we’ve got to do well in the morning to do well for ourselves at night.”
Men’s Highlights
Casillas posted a third-place finish in the 1-meter diving event with an NCAA Zone `B’ qualifying score, a career-best score and a Tech season-best score of 335.80. His finals score topped his prelims score of 324.85, which was also a Zone `B’ qualifying score.
In the 400 medley relay, the unit of Correia, Loschi, Ben Southern and Noah Harasz placed third overall with a Tech season-best time of 3:10.91. The time also ranks third overall in Tech history.
The team of Alex Goerzen, Kimpel, Brad Oberg and Dan Cohen Solal turned in a time of 3:15.16 in the 400 medley relay, which ranks as the ninth-best time in school history.
Also posting a top-three finish was the Yellow Jackets’ men’s team of Correia, Aidan Pastel, Southern and Harasz, who touched the wall in third-place overall in the 200 free relay event with a time of 1:20.18. Their time of 1:20.18 was a Tech season best mark for the event and ranks as the eighth-fastest 200 free relay time in Tech history.
Correia also recorded a third-place showing in the 200 IM finals, posting an NCAA `B’ qualifying time and Tech season-best mark of 1:46.19, topping his NCAA `B’ qualifying time of 1:48.00 in the 200 IM prelims from the morning session.
Tech’s Kimpel placed eighth overall in the 200 IM finals with an NCAA `B’ qualifying time of 1:48.61.
Freshman Tim Slanschek also scored for Tech in the 200 IM, placing 12th overall with a career-best time and the ninth-best time in Tech history in the 200 IM at 1:49.12. Brian Woodbury (1:50.27) and Manny Barragan (1:52.07) both picked up points for the Yellow Jackets in the 200 IM with finishes at 17th and 20th-place, respectively.
Williamson registered a career-best and an NCAA `B’ qualifying time of 4:22.54 in the 500 free prelims. It is also a Tech season best mark and ranks fourth overall in Tech history. He went on to place seventh overall in the finals heat with an NCAA `B’ qualifying time of 4:23.87.
Loschi (4:29.34) and freshman Brennan Day (4:29.64) also scored for the Jackets in the 500 free, while Day’s time of 4:29.64 was a career-best.
Both Clay Hering (4:35.05) and Austin Whalen (4:35.59) also registered career-best marks in the 500 free finals.
Tech had six swimmers score in the 50 free event, as Harasz led the swarm with an eighth-place finish and a Tech season-best time of 20.38. Pastel (20.56) and Robert Borowicz (20.62) finished 12th and 13th, just ahead of Oberg (20.67) in 16th, Cohen Solal (20.86) in 18th and Stefan Kranenburg (20.87) in 19th.
Women’s Highlights
The highlight of the day on the women’s side came not once, but twice, as Ruiu set a new school record in the 200 IM with her time of 2:00.58 in the prelims, besting her previous school record of 2:00.97. The 200 free relay unit of Morgan Lyons, Wang, Kaitlin Kitchens and Ruiu touched the wall in fourth-place overall with a Tech season-best time of 1:31.92. Their time on Thursday night also ranks as the third-best time in Tech history for the women’s 200 free relay event.
In the 50 free, Wang matched her career-high and the second-best mark in school history with an NCAA `B’ qualifying time of 22.90, good enough for an 11th-place finals finish.
Wang placed just ahead of Kitchens who finished 13th overall with her career-best time of 23.01. Kitchens’ time also ranks fourth all-time in the women’s 50 free in Tech history.
Also scoring for the Yellow Jackets was Ilgenfritz in the 500 free. The freshman, who recorded a career-best time of 4:52.71 in the prelims, topped that mark with a new career-best time of 4:48.85 in the 500 free finals for a 14th-place finish. The time was a Tech season best and ranks second all-time in the Tech record books for the 500 free.
Junior Kira de Bruyn also scored for the Jackets with a 19th-place finish and a time of 2:03.07 in the 200 IM finals.
Freshman Tamir Gonen Cohen also competed in the 500 free finals, recording a career-best time of 4:54.78.
Freshman Kristen Hepler registered a career-best time of 2:05.16 in the 200 IM prelims, which is also ranks as the 10th best time of school history.
Day two of the 2016 GT Invitational will begin tomorrow morning with the prelims at 10 a.m. The finals will once again start at 5:30 p.m.
