ATHENS, Ga. – Georgia Tech swimming & diving picked up a total of nine individual wins and two relay victories combined on Wednesday afternoon as the Yellow Jackets fell on the road at nationally ranked Georgia in dual meet action. The women’s team suffered a 182-113 loss to the No. 5 ranked Lady Bulldogs, while the men fell 179-121 to the No. 12 ranked UGA men’s team at the Gabrielsen Natatorium in Athens, Ga.
“I thought that we competed well today against two of the top teams in the country,” head coach Courtney Shealy Hart stated. “I am looking forward to competing next week in our fall invitational which again will include a number of highly touted teams on both the women’s and men’s sides.”
The Yellow Jackets will next be in action next week, Nov. 16-18, at the annual Georgia Tech Invitational. The prelims will start at 10 a.m. and the finals will begin at 5:30 p.m. over all three days of competition.
Women’s Highlights
The women’s team (3-2) picked up two wins apiece from both Iris Wang and Camryn Hidalgo, as well as a victory from first-year Jacket Catriona MacGregor in a tough loss to the Lady Bulldogs (6-0) on Wednesday afternoon.
Wang tallied wins in both the 50 free (23.09) and the 100 free (49.76 – NCAA B mark) on the afternoon. She also registered a runner-up finish in the 200 free with her time of 1:47.85, an NCAA B qualifying mark.
For the fourth time this year, Hidalgo swept the diving events on the women’s side, earning a win in both the 1-meter (296.33) and 3-meter (312.30) springboard events on Wednesday.
MacGregor recorded her win in the 200 IM with a time of 2:06.24 and also placed third overall for Tech in the women’s 100 breast with her time of 1:04.52.
The Jackets took first-place honors in the 400 free relay with a time of 3:25.82 and finished runner-up in the 200 yard medley relay with a time of 1:42.87.
Freshman Julia Shuford recorded a runner-up finish in the 200 breast (2:18.25), while senior Kira de Bruyn picked up a second place finish in the 200 IM (2:07.59).
Sprinter Kaitlin Kitchens finished third in the 50 free (23.59) and fourth in the 100 free (51.18) on the day.
Tech earned another top-three finish in the women’s 500 free, as Emily Ilgenfritz placed third overall with her time of 4:57.79. Ilgenfritz (2:04.56) and Maddie Oliver (2:06.66) touched the wall fifth and sixth, respectively, in the 200 fly to also score for the Jackets.
Both Camille Long (10:24.65) and Sara al Khatib (10:28.66) scored for the Jackets in the 1000 free, placing fifth and sixth overall, respectively, while freshman Celine Nugent scored for Tech in the 200 IM (third – 2:09.19), the 200 free (fifth – 1:53.14) and the 500 free (fifth – 5:05.95).
Sophomore Caroline Lee added points for the Yellow Jackets in both the 200 back (third – 1:59.45) and the 100 back (fourth – 55.63), while Allie Paschal (sixth – 56.26) scored in the 100 back and fellow freshman Grace Mauldin (sixth – 2:04.51) in the 200 back event.
Florina Ilie scored a point for the Jackets with her fifth place finish in the 100 breast at 1:04.58, while Kristen Hepler turned in fifth place showing in the 200 breast with her time of 2:20.59. Hepler also placed fourth in the 200 IM with a time of 2:10.12.
In the 100 fly, Laura Branton (55.91) and Chloe Miller (57.07) finished fifth and sixth overall to add to the Jackets’ point total on the day.
Sophomore Carly Doi also scored for the Jackets with a fourth place finish in the 1-meter dive (269.93) and a sixth place showing in the 3-meter (240.30).
Men’s Highlights
The men’s team (3-2) was led by two wins from Caio Pumputis and one win each from upperclassmen Noah Harasz, Rodrigo Correia and Matt Casillas in the loss to Georgia (5-1).
Pumputis recorded a win in the 200 free with an NCAA B qualifying time of 1:36.12 and touched the wall first in the 200 breast with another NCAA B mark of 1:56.88. The first-year Jacket also finished second overall in the 200 IM with an NCAA B time of 1:47.79.
Seeing his first meet action of the season, Harasz picked up the victory in the 50 free with his time of 20.63, where he led a swarm of Yellow Jackets in Franco Reyes (second – 20.82), Aidan Pastel (third – 21.06) and Corben Miles (fifth – 21.22) in the sprint event.
Correia earned the win in the 100 free with his time of 44.43 and also posted a runner-up finish in the 100 back with an NCAA B qualifying time of 48.11.
Casillas led the Jackets on the boards, as he won the 3-meter event (369.00) and took third overall in the 1-meter dive with a score of 302.10, while freshmen Henry Carman (fourth – 287.55) and Jacob Kreider (284.10) also scored in the 1-meter dive for Tech on the day. Carman also placed fourth overall in the 3-meter dive with a score of 312.08.
In the 100 breast, both Moises Loschi (55.06 – NCAA B mark) and Jonathan Yang (56.78) scored for Tech placing second and fifth, respectively, while Tech freshman Christian Ferraro (1:48.07) and sophomore Clay Hering (1:49.00) finished in third and fifth, respectively, for the Jackets in the 200 fly to add to Tech’s team score.
The freshmen duo of Reyes (48.86) and Ferraro (49.07) touched the wall 3-4 in the 100 fly.
Freshmen Albert Zhi scored for Tech in both the 100 free (third – 45.04) and in the 200 free (fourth – 1:39.29), while seniors Brad Oberg (100 back – 50.44) and Harasz (100 free – 45.54) each recorded fourth place finishes.
Co-captain Colt Williamson placed third overall in the 200 back with a time of 1:48.12, while Loschi (1:58.67 – NCAA B mark) and Alex Kimpel (2:03.60) finished third and fifth, respectively, in the 200 breast event.
Sophomores Joonas Koski (fifth – 9:26.09) and Brennan Day (sixth – 9:31.70) both scored for the Jackets in the 1000 free, while Koski also placed fifth overall in both the 200 back (1:49.68) and the 500 free (4:37.05). Day added a sixth place showing in the 500 free with his time of 4:42.62.
In the two relay events, Tech touched the wall in first-place overall in the 400 free relay with a time of 3:00.21 and took second in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:28.46.
