ATLANTA (Oct. 2) – Fifth-ranked Georgia Tech stretched its team lead to six strokes Saturday with a two-day total of 9-under-par 567 at the 10th annual Carpet Capital Collegiate in Rocky Face, Ga. The tournament, which features 11 top-25 teams, is being contested at the 6,906-yard, par 72 The Farm Golf Club and is the Yellow Jackets’ home event for the year.
Tech maintained its lead behind the strength of junior Bryce Molder (Conway, Ark.), who fired a 68 to take the individual lead at 68-68-136. He shot a bogey-free round and scored four birdies, two each on the front and back nine. Molder’s 8-under-par lead was three strokes better than Alex Rocha of Mississippi State, who ended the day at 72-67-139 (-5). Tech senior Matt Kuchar (Lake Mary, Fla.) ended the day tied-for-seventh after firing an even-par 72 to finish the day at 69-72-141 (-3). Sophomore Kris Mikkelsen (Woodstock, Ga.) shot even par for a second consecutive day and was tied-for-16th at 72-72-144. Redshirt-freshman Troy Matteson (Austin, Texas) was 4-over on the second day and was 23rd at 72-76-148, while sophomore Matt Weibring (Plano, Texas) was at 74-76-150.
Tech, which is currently sitting at 279-288-567, will be trying to win its first team title since 1995. No. 1 Clemson was second at 282-291-573 (-3) and was one stroke ahead of No. 8 Florida, which was at 2-under 287-287-574. No. 7 Houston was fourth at 289-292-581 (+5), while No. 16 UCLA was fifth at 289-293-582 (+6). Trailing Molder and Rocha in the top five were Clemson’s Lucas Glover at 68-72-140 (-4), NC State’s Carl Pettersson was at 70-70-140 and Houston’s Chris Morris was 71-69-140.
Play ends Sunday with 18 holes.
