Cameron Tringale and Jason Day survived a final-round charge to claim the 26th playing of the Franklin Templeton Shootout in wire-to-wire fashion. The duo finished with a 54-hole total of 32-under 184, one better than the team of defending champions Matt Kuchar and Harris English. Day and Tringale split $770,000 with the victory.
As a member of the winning team, Tringale became the 11th player to win the event in his first attempt. It also marks the second year in succession the event has had a player win in his first appearance. Harris English did so in 2013.
Tringale became the second Georgia Tech product in as many years to be on the winning team at the Franklin Templeton Shootout. Matt Kuchar, another former Tech product, was on the winning team a year ago with English.
Richard Werenski, a 2014 Georgia Tech graduate, survived the grueling 108-hole qualifying school for the Web.com Tour Tuesday by finishing in a tie for 43rd place. The top 45 finishers and ties at the conclusion of play Tuesday will be fully exempt until the second reshuffle of the 2015 season. Werenski finished 7-under-par after a poor start (76-73-67-65-69-72). He joins former Yellow Jackets such as Paul Haley, Troy Matteson and Matt Weibring, who will play that tour in 2015.
The PGA Tour takes a break until January, when Kuchar and 29 other 2014 tournament champions will play in the Hyundai Tournament of Champions in Hawai’i.
In other action over the weekend, Stewart Cink and his son Connor were unable to defend their 2013 title at the PNC Father-Son Challenge at the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club in Orlando, Fla.
