Golfers Tied for Lead at Jerry Pate National

ATLANTA – Roberto Castro and Mike Barbosa stand just one shot off the lead after posting scores of five-under-par 137 Monday, and second-ranked Georgia Tech is tied for the lead after 36 holes at the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate in Birmingham, Ala.

Tech was five shots behind Georgia following the morning round Monday after posting an 11-under-par score of 273, but its afternoon round of 279 allowed it to vault past the Bulldogs and host Alabama into a tie with Oklahoma State at 552, which is 16 shots under par.

The tournament is being played at the 6,958-yard, par-71 Old Overton Golf Club in Birmingham, and six teams are within five strokes in the team race with the final 18 holes scheduled for Tuesday.

Castro, a sophomore from Alpharetta, Ga., shot 68 in the morning and 69 in the afternoon, while Barbosa followed his 67 in the morning with a 70. They are tied for fifth place behind a foursome that includes Alabama’s Mark Harrell, Georgia’s Brendon Todd, Southern California’s Tyler Ley and TCU’s David Schultz.

Nicholas Thompson, a senior from Coral Springs, Fla., is tied for 12th another stroke back at 138 (67-71), and Chan Song, a senior from Orlando, Fla., is tied for 21st at 140 (71-69). Junior Thomas Jordan of Sea Island, Ga., who shot 76 in the morning, came back with a 71 and is in a tie for 48th at 147.

Augusta State (553) is one shot behind Tech and Oklahoma State in the team race, with Alabama (554) in fourth, Georgia (556) in fifth, and Auburn (557) in sixth.
