Kevin Larsen and Roberto Castro paced Georgia Tech with one-under-par 70s on Saturday as the fourth-ranked Yellow Jackets posted an even-par 284 and finished in a tie for third place at the NCAA Central Regional in Chardon, Ohio.
Tech, the No. 2 seed in the regional and the fourth-ranked team in the nation, thus qualified for the NCAA Men’s Division I Championship May 31-June 3 in Sunriver, Ore. Oklahoma State captured the regional title by 16 strokes over Northwestern after shooting a four-under-par 280 Saturday and finishing with a 54-hole total of 845. Northwestern finished at 861, while Tech tied with Texas A&M at 867.
Other qualifiers included Lamar (869), Minnesota (874), Oklahoma (877), Clemson (881), Duke (883) and Kentucky (884).
The Yellow Jackets’ 284 total Saturday was the second-low score of the day. Castro survived a pair of double bogeys on his front nine by posting five birdies on his card. Larsen played steady, even par going out with two birdies and a bogey coming in.
Freshman Cameron Tringale shot a 72 Saturday to finish at one-over 214 for the tournament, the Yellow Jackets’ best 54-hole score, and tied for fourth place individually, nine shots off the pace of Jonathan Moore of Oklahoma State (67 – 205).
Larsen finished at three-over 217, tying for 14th place, while Castro tied for 30th at seven-over 220. Mike Barbosa shot a 72 Saturday and tied for 37th overall at 221, and freshman Taylor Hall posted a 73 Saturday for a 54-hole total of 226.
