Golfers Lead by 9 After 36 Holes at Jerry Pate National

Oct. 10, 2005

ATLANTA – Freshmen Taylor Hall and Cameron Tringale each shot four-under-par 67 in the afternoon round, lifting No. 2-ranked Georgia Tech to a nine-shot lead after 36 holes of the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate golf tournament in Birmingham, Ala.

The first-year players helped the Yellow Jackets break out of a first-round tie for the top spot and have Tech in excellent position for its first victory since the Puerto Rico Classic last spring. The final round at the 6,958-yard, par-71 Old Overton Golf Club is scheduled for Tuesday.

All-American Roberto Castro, a junior from Alpharetta, Ga., posted a first-round 65 and combined with junior Kevin Larsen’s 67 to lift Tech to a 10-under-par 274 in the morning. The Jackets shot 278 in the afternoon for a 36-hole total of 552 (16-under-par) to take the lead alone over defending national champion Georgia (285-276 — 561).

The Bulldogs are tied with Alabama-Birmingham, which has the individual leader in Garrett Osborn, who shot 62-66 to take a nine-shot lead in the medalist race.

Hall, a red-shirt freshman from LaGrange, Ga., who played No. 5 for Tech Monday, posted the best rounds of his brief career, including a 71 in the morning, and is tied for third place individually at four-under-par 138, 10 shots behind Osborn.

Castro, who carded a 74 in the afternoon, and Larsen, with a 72 in the second round, are tied for fifth place at three-under 139. Tringale shot 73 in the morning and is tied for ninth place at two-under 140. Senior Mike Barbosa shot 71-72 and is tied for 23rd place at 143.

Host school Alabama is in fourth place in the team standings, followed by Clemson and Auburn.
