ATLANTA – Adam Cranford fired a 3-under-par 69 to lead Georgia Tech, and the 14th-ranked Yellow Jackets stand in eighth place after 18 holes at the Toyota Men’s Golf Championship in Las Vegas, Nev.
The 54-hole event is being played at the 7,440-yard, par-72 Southern Highlands Course with a 15-team field that includes 13 of the nation’s top 25 teams. The second round is scheduled for Saturday, and the final 18 holes set for Sunday. Tech has won this event each of the past two seasons.
Cranford, a senior from Augusta, Ga., recorded five birdies and two bogeys in his round for Tech, and is in a tie for fourth place with five other golfers, four shots behind Georgia’s Kevin Kisner, who carded a 7-under-par 65 Friday. Jason Moon of NC State is a shot behind Kisner with a 66, and Rusty Kennedy holds third place with a 68.
Tech’s team score of 1-over-par 289 and is eight strokes behind No. 7-ranked Texas (281). The Longhorns have a one-shot lead on No. 5 Nevada-Las Vegas (284). Arizona State and top-rated Clemson are tied for third place at 284, with No. 23 NC State in fifth at 285, No. 3 Texas Christian in sixth at 286, and No. 19 Georgia in seventh at 288.
Troy Matteson, a senior from Austin, Texas, was the only other Tech player to break par, posting a 71, and is tied for 18th place. Nicholas Thompson, a sophomore from Coral Springs, Fla., shot a 73, while sophomore Chan Wongluekiet and freshman Thomas Jordan each carded a 76.
