ATLANTA – Georgia Tech’s golf team was eight over par with a team score of 296, in 12th place and 15 strokes behind Clemson after Sunday’s first round of the Puerto Rico Classic in San Juan.
The defending national champion Tigers posted a seven-under-par score of 281 on the 6,931-yard, par 72 River Course at Rio Mar Country Club. Oklahoma is in second place, two shots back at 283, followed by Minnesota and Texas at even-par 288 and Florida at 289.
Freshman Kevin Larsen paced the fifth-ranked Yellow Jackets with a one-under-par 71 Sunday. He is tied for 11th place individually, five strokes behind Jason Hartwick of Texas, who fired a six-under-par 66. Jack Ferguson of Clemson is a shot behind after a shooting 67, and Justin Smith of Oklahoma is third at 68.
Only 28 golfers out of the 90 in the field matched or beat par.
Also counting for Tech Sunday was freshman Roberto Castro (74, tied for 36th place), junior Nicholas Thompson (75, tied for 46th) and sophomore Thomas Jordan (76, tied for 56th). Junior Chan Wongluekiet shot 82 for Tech.
