Golf Team Tied for Ninth at Isleworth

Oct. 26, 2008

Windermere, Fla. – Cameron Tringale paced Georgia Tech with a 1-under-par 71 Sunday and is tied for fourth place individually, while the 23rd-ranked Yellow Jackets shot 299 and are tied for ninth place after the opening round of the Isleworth-UCF Collegiate golf tournament.

Tringale, coming off a victory in the Brickyard Collegiate two weeks ago, fired his fifth par-or-better round in 10 this fall. The senior from Laguna Niguel, Calif., birdied two par-5s and two par-4s to balance three bogeys over the 7,544-yard Isleworth Golf and Country Club course.

Tied with Southern California’s Tom Glissmeyer and Georgia’s Russell Henley, he is three shots off the lead of Alabama’s Matthew Swan and Indiana’s Jorge Campillo, who each shot 68. Oklahoma State’s Kevin Tway holds second place alone with a 69.

The Crimson tied grabbed the first-round team lead with a 1-under 287, two strokes clear of the Hoosiers (289). USC is in third place at 2-over 290, while Texas Tech and Georgia are tied for fourth at 6-over 294. Clemson and Oklahoma State are tied for sixth at 296, followed by South Carolina at 297. Tech is tied with Kentucky and UCLA.

“Tee to green, we played well, but we continue to have some problems with our putting,” said head coach Bruce Heppler. “Cameron had a very good round today, but we need to get our other guys going a little better tomorrow.”

David Dragoo, who had only six pars in his round, shot 75, John-Tyler Griffin 76 and Chesson Hadley 77 to count for the Yellow Jackets, while freshman Minghao Wang posted a 79.

Tech struggled on the front nine, playing the outgoing holes in 7-over-par, but steadied itself on the backside after once occupying 17th place in the 18-team field. Tringale played the incoming nine even, while Dragoo and Griffin each were 1-over. Griffin played steady, with one bogey and eight pars, while Dragoo had three birdies and four bogeys.

Tech tees off during the 8 a.m. hour for Monday’s second round.
