Golf Team Third at Carpet Capital Collegiate

ATLANTA – Roberto Castro and Nicholas Thompson each shot 1-over-par 73 Friday afternoon to pace Georgia Tech, and the top-ranked Yellow Jackets are in third place after the first round of the Carpet Capital Collegiate in Rocky Face, Ga.

At 11-over-par 299, Tech stands nine shots off the pace of third-ranked Georgia (290) and four behind No. 4 New Mexico (295). Duke (300) is one shot behind the Jackets in fourth place, followed by Wake Forest and No. 5 Auburn (301), Vanderbilt (302), Clemson and Tennessee (each at 303). Defending champion Florida is tied for 10th place with East Tennessee State at 305.

The tournament is being played at The Farm in Rocky Face, Ga., a challenging 6,906-yard, par 72 layout that has attracted an 18-team field with seven of the top 10 teams in the nation. The second round begins at 8:30 p.m. Saturday, with the final 18 holes getting underway at 8 a.m. Sunday. Updated results every two holes will be posted on Golfstatresults.com each day.

Castro, a sophomore from Alpharetta, Ga., who is the nation’s fifth-ranked player, had one birdie and two bogeys in his round Friday. Thompson, a senior from Coral Springs, Fla., ranked No. 12, had four birdies and five bogeys en route to his 73. The two players are in a group of seven tied for 11th place, four shots behind David Denham of Georgia, who shot 69 and has a one-stroke lead over Madalitso Muthiya of New Mexico.

Mark Donnell of Vanderbilt, Patton Kizzire and Stuart Moore of Auburn, and Nathan Smith of Duke each carded 71s and are tied for third. Colby Beckstrom of TCU, Jay Choi of New Mexico, Matt Every of Florida and Jack Ferguson of Clemson are tied for seventh at even-par 72.

Kevin Larsen, a sophomore from Santa Barbara, Calif., playing in his first event this fall, shot 76 for Tech Friday and is tied for 27th, and junior Mike Barbosa of St. Petersburg, Fla., shot 77 (tied for 37th) to count toward the Yellow Jackets’ team score. Chan Song, a senior from Orlando, Fla., ranked 18th in the nation, shot 78 and did not count for Tech.
