Golf Team Nine Shots Back at Preview Invitational

Oct. 2, 2006

ATLANTA –

Taylor Hall shot a 1-over-par 71 Monday to pace Georgia Tech, and the third-ranked Yellow Jackets are in ninth place, nine strokes off the lead after the first round of the PING/Golfweek Preview Invitational in Williamsburg, Va.

The 54-hole event, featuring 14 of the nation’s top 25 teams, is being played at Golden Horseshoe Golf Club on the par-70 North Course, site of next spring’s NCAA Championship. Live scoring is available at www.golfstatresults.com.

Georgia was the only team to break par Monday, posting a one-under score of 279, and hold a one-shot lead on Texas A&M. Florida is in third place, followed by defending national champion Oklahoma State and UNLV. All 15 teams are within 18 shots of each other, including host Virginia Commonwealth, the only team in the field not ranked in the top 25.

Hall, a sophomore from LaGrange, Ga., started slowly but rallied with three birdies on his back nine (Tech teed off on the 10th hole Monday) and is tied with 10 other golfers for 17th place. Robert Gates of Texas A&M, Niklas Lemke of Arizona State and Pablo Martin of Oklahoma State are tied for the lead with 67s, and were among only 11 golfers to break par on Monday.

Roberto Castro and Adam Cohan each shot 72 for Tech on Monday and are tied for 28th place while Cameron Tringale carded a 73 (T43), and Kevin Larsen came in at 75 (T54).

Tech tees off ay 8 a.m. Tuesday with Arizona State and Brigham Young.
